Lightness despite tragedy!
The album “Os Afro Sambas” is a milestone of Brazilian popular music.
In 1966 Baden Powell (songwriter, guitarist) and Vinicius de Moreas (lyricist) combined the Brazilian Bossa Nova with African rhythm and the spontaneity and virtuosity of jazz. The album was recorded at a time when the music world was breaking down the boundaries between classical music and pop and East and West. Powell and de Moreas were even one step ahead and didn’t even start from genre divisions.
The fact that Mara Minjoli (vocals) and João Luís Nogueira (guitar) are now more than 50 years later occupied with the compositions of Powell and de Moreas and release them under the project of the same name OS AFRO SAMBAS shows how timeless their songs still sound today.
Freshly interpreted and rearranged, all eight OS AFRO SAMBAS songs are more than just a bow to their great role models. “Iemanya” presents itself as a tropical dance with hypnotizing vocals, while “Canto de Oxum” comes along rather catchy, but with wonderfully virtuoso guitar and “Labareda” combines fast-paced, playful percussion with jazz piano.
Even if you’ve never been to Brazil before, OS AFRO SAMBAS guarantees that you’ll be fascinated by this music.
Powells and de Moreas’ Afro-Groove is as accessible as it is diverse:
A dark feeling is always combined with a warm, uplifting mood.
Using the example of OS AFRO SAMBAS, it can be impressively proven that the mixing of the most diverse influences can produce something wonderful and new – then as now.
The line-up of OS AFRO SAMBAS is as international as the music itself.
