Benedikt Jahnel presents his latest album – The Invariant

–> Double concert with the Maik Krahl Quartet

Benedikt Jahnel draws attention especially with the music of his trio, as a sideman he is known among others with the band Cyminology. Benedict toured nearly 40 countries, including the USA, Japan, Kazakhstan, Syria and Indonesia. Concerts and projects were performed with Phil Woods, Johannes Enders, Charlie Mariano, David Friedman, Frank Möbus, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Dave Liebman, John Abercrombie, Manfred Eicher, Clarence Penn, Dan Weiss and Steve Davis.

” Who ever captured Jahnel’s proven trio (…) quickly realizes that the brain and heart communicate perfectly. Jahnel’s music is very intelligent – but it would only be worth half as much if he did not compensate for mental achievements with soulful melos, lyrical and unconditional beauty.”

Ssirus W. Pakzad, Jazzthing, 01.04.18

He can be heard on numerous recordings, since 2012 his trio projects are published by the Munich label ECM. The album “Equilibrium” was celebrated by the international press.

The long-awaited third album was produced at Rainbow Studios, Oslo. It has been available since 13 January 2017. With “The Invariant” the trio shows itself from a new side: brilliant virtuosic the piano parts, the bass powerful to filigree, electrifying the pulsating drums – everything seems to be of one piece and at no time designed for effects.

A number of new influences, sounds and ideas that the Benedikt Jahnel Trio has never heard before are making their way onto the new CD The Invariant. The trio still has its own language: ingenious rhythms, catchy melody arcs, retracted grooves, circular sequences inspired by Minimal Music – and above it stands the form, which in Jahnels’ compositions is closer to classical works than to typical jazz sheets. On the third CD of the trio, eight new pieces are presented, in which the original sophisticated balance between composed and freely improvised parts is celebrated with relaxed casualness.

In Bonn he is now with Marc Muellbauer (bass) and Tobias Backhaus (drums).

Marc Muellbauer has become a very sought-after sideman in jazz but also in other musical styles in Berlin. Muellbauer had already composed for his first bands, in Berlin this side of his creativity did not let him go and he founded the band “Ginster 7” with Daniel Mattar and Julia Hülsmann, with piano, guitar, accordion, bass, clarinet, trumpet and vocals. From this he developed the idea for his band “Marc Muellbauer’s Kaleidoscope” during his postgraduate studies in jazz at the HdK.

Tobias Backhaus is also a highly sought-after sideman of the international jazz scene.

He studied his instrument with jazz greats such as John Riley, Ari Hoenig, Jim Black, Jeff Ballard and Keith Copeland and has been studying drums and composition with Prof. John Hollenbeck at the Jazz-Institut Berlin.

Tobias Backhaus worked with artists such as Torsten de Winkel, Till Brönner, Tony Lakatos, Peter Protschka, Rick Margitza, Carlos Bica, Gwilym Simcock, Jiggs Whigham, Torsten Goods, Bob Degen, Peter Weniger, Frank Chastenier or Ack van Rooyen, the Dresden Symphony Orchestra, the NDR Big Band, the Berlin Jazz Orchestra, the European Movement Jazz Orchestra…
